Dr. Ronan Kavanagh is a Consultant Rheumatologist, a Galwegian and graduate of the National University of Ireland (Galway). He completed his specialist training in rheumatology in 1998 after training in Cambridge, Norwich and Belfast. He became a member of the Royal College of Physicans in 1993 and obtained his MD Thesis at NUIG in 1996.
Like all rheumatologists he has expertise in dealing with diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, osteoarthritis, gout, soft tissue problems (like tennis elbows / bursitis / tendonitis), fibromyalgia, connective tissue diseases like lupus (SLE) and vasculitis.
He has a special interest in the management of osteoporosis, runs a clinic for musicians with musculoskeletal problems and has an active interest in social media in medicine.
He is a former president and secretary of the Irish Society for Rheumatology and a founding member of Performing Arts Medicine Ireland and a member of the British Association of Performing Arts Medicine, Performing Arts Medicine Association (USA) and the American College of Rheumatology

Dr. Adrian Gibbs
Dr. Adrian Gibbs, Consultant in Rheumatology & General Internal Medicine graduated from University College Galway in 1997.
Postgraduate training included working in University College Hospital and Merlin Park Hospital in Galway, Mayo General Hospital, Castlebar and Letterkenny General Hospital.
He commenced the Specialist Registrar Scheme in 2001 which included two years of research in St. Vincents Hospital in the areas of inflammatory arthritis and osteoporosis. He completed his higher specialist training in 2006 and continued working in the research environment until taking up the position of Consultant Rheumatologist in the Galway Clinic in January 2007.
Dr. Gibbs is a member of the Royal College of Physicians of Ireland, and the Irish Society for Rheumatology, and has previously served as a council member for the Irish Society for Rheumatology.
His current areas of interest include inflammatory arthritis, osteoporosis, soft tissue injuries and back pain.
Ms Trish Bewley
Our Rheumatology Nurse, Trish Bewley received her education and training in the north west of England. Originally registered with NMC England, she is now registered with An Board Altranais
She is an experienced rheumatology nurse, and has been working in rheumatology since 2002. She has a number of extra qualifications in nursing and rheumatology specialist nursing, which includes:
- BSc (Honours) in Chronic Disease Management Nursing Specialist (University of Central Lancashire)
- Management of age related bone and joint disorders (University College Dublin)
- Chronic disease specialist practitioner training (University of Central Lancashire)
- Preparation of mentor
- Travel Health Course
- Diploma in Diabetes Management
- ICHGCP training in good clinical practice
Ms Bewley is a former staff governor is Lancashire Teaching Hospital NHS Trust and has also been a coordinator of various clinical trials.
