This is a list of suggested investigations for referrers.
Where these investigations are provided at the time of referral it helps prioritise referrals and save on additional visits etc.
These tests are also considerably less expensive where done in primary care.
Inflammatory Arthritis
including Rheumatoid arthritis, Psoriatic arthritis, SLE
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, Rheumatoid Factor, Anti-CCP antibodies, Autoimmune screen , ANA, Vit D levels (if available)
Ankylosing Spondylitis / inflammatory back pain
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, HLA B-27 antigen (if available).
Gout
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, TFT’s, Uric acid (not included as part of SMAC in most labs), Fasting Glucose and lipids, HbA1C
Osteoporosis
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, TFT’s, Fasting glucose / HbA1C, Vit D levels, SPEP / Immunoglobulins, Anti Gliaden antibodies.
PTH levels - for patients with severe osteoporosis who are candidates for anabolic therapies (eg Teriparatide), those with hypercalcaemia or with rapid unexplained bone loss.
Myositis / Dermatomyositis
This is a useful screen for secondary causes of osteoporosis.

FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, CPK, LDH, TFTs, vitamin D, ANA, CTD screen, myositis antibody panel
Fibromyalgia / Chronic pain syndrome
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, TFT’s, Vit D levels, Rheumatoid factor, Anti-CCP antibodies
*don’t check ANA unless specific lupus symptoms are present
Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE)
Tests
FBC, SMAC, ESR, CRP, Rheumatoid Factor, Anti-CCP antibodies, ANA,dDNA, ENA's, serum complements, antiphospholipid antibodies, Vit D levels (if available), Urinalysis, spot urine protein/creatinine ratio
